Matt Shafeek Who?

Been there buddy. Let’s go ahead and fix that

About The Author (Of This Website)

I’m a creative, moving through several spaces, and always looking to explore new ones.

I write stories, often with a sci-fi bent, almost always with a comedic tone. I graduated with an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia in 2016 and have dabbled in creative nonfiction, live storytelling, and screenwriting for over a decade now.

I’m also a performer, with 20+ years of experience, regularly performing at the Magnet Theater in Chelsea, NYC. I also wrote and performed in a one man show called “Multiplayer” at UCB several years ago. Comedy has run through my blood since I discovered how much fun it was to get a laugh from my friends in class then getting an answer right or wrong.

Lastly, I’m a gamer, with a passion I’ve nourished since childhood for everything from tabletop to console, from multi-hour strategy / role playing games to nights of laugh a minute Jackbox Party Pack games. Much of my material taps into my love of games.

Projects, Performances & Writing Samples

2.0 (Short Film Script)

In 2025 I wrote a short film about an engineer named Hasan who creates the AI that’s going to replace him. It was short in February 2026 and is currently in post production. The script is available to read here.

Glitch (Pilot Script)

This was my first pilot, a hybrid live action/animated series that follows a group of misfit gamers on the competitive e-sports tournament scene. The group is led by Lydia, a talented lifelong gamer pursuing her passion in an environment that isn't necessarily passionate about her.

When In Doubt (Memoir Essay)

I’ve written several personal essays about some of my more interesting adventures and learned experiences. This story follows my time being an ‘arrogant atheist’ at college, starting with where I was at the time (feeling unsure of myself for the first time in an unfamiliar space) and how a new relationship and the intervention of the school’s Christian society led to me starting a anti-religious revolution (or not).

SimCal (Pilot Script)

My second pilot, about a schlubby game tester named Willy who discovers our world is actually a mere simulation and, in a twist of fate, winds up recruited to help keep things copacetic from within. Meanwhile, Babsy, his new spitfire of a partner has her sights set on escaping the simulation at any cost.

Multiplayer (One Man Show, UCB, 2007 - 2008)

In 2007 I wrote and performed in a one man show called “Multiplayer,” with four character scenes all related to gaming in one way or another. An adult screaming at his young team before getting yelled at himself by someone’s mother, a young child reporting on their invented summer vacation of catching Pokemon, a DDR legend retiring with one last dance, and a recently rejected podcaster delivering gaming news through tears. I had so much fun writing and performing this!
